It’s time for parents to breathe a sigh of relief: school has started again for children across the country. But as 3.3 million students are expected to graduate high school at the end of the school year, their minds will inevitably turn to what’s next – and the refining industry is certainly ready.
As stated in a recent Downstream Today article, Millennials currently represent the highest proportion of the U.S. workers, with 53.5 million of them in the U.S. labor force – compared to 52.7 million Gen-Xers and 44.6 million Baby Boomers.
However, the median age for workers in the refining industry is 43.9 years, above the 42.4 median age for all industries. As a result, the need to begin replacing the current aging workforce with new high school and university graduates is higher than ever – and as this video shows, that means lucrative opportunities for graduates at all levels.
Can the refining industry support new jobs? It certainly can: the U.S. fuel and petrochemical industries are projected to support 3.9 million jobs by 2025. And these jobs pay well – for high school graduates working in a skilled craft position, the average salary ranges from $43,000 to more than $60,000 per year.
Even though the school year has only just started, it will finish sooner than you think – and well-paid, rewarding jobs in the refining and petrochemical industries are waiting at the end of it.
